Awards

We are excited to announce that nominations for the Annual HVAO Awards open this week. We invite any HVAO member to submit nominations for one of the three Annual HVAO Awards listed below beginning June 1, 2021 through June 30, 2021. The three awards, which will be presented at the Fall 2021’s Kick-off Harvard Veteran/Military BBQ (exact date TBD, location will be in or near Harvard Yard), are:
 
  • The HVAO Alumni Leadership Award – presented to a Harvard Veteran for their outstanding professional achievement, leadership, commitment to public service, and support of the Harvard Veterans community. Please send in your nomination using the form found here.
  • The HVAO Ally Award – presented to a non-veteran for their exceptional leadership and support in including, supporting and honoring Harvard veterans. Please send in your nomination using the form found here.
  • The HVAO On-Campus Impact Award – presented to an on-campus Harvard student veteran, ROTC or military-affiliated student for their impactful leadership on behalf of on-campus veterans, as well as educating the Harvard community, building relationships with various Harvard administrations, and honoring Harvard's historic veterans. HVAO ALUMNI LEADERSHIP AWARD
 

The HVAO Alumni Leadership Award was established in 2021 to recognize Harvard alumni veterans for their outstanding professional achievement, leadership, commitment to public service, and support of the Harvard Veteran community. The evaluation criteria are as follows:
 
  • Professional Achievement: Remarkable achievement throughout the nominee's career post-Harvard graduation/separation. Recognized for making exceptional contributions to chosen field.
  • Leadership: Evidence of highly effective, character-based positive leadership. Possesses creative vision, motivates others, and has a record of accomplishing major goals. Demonstrated ability to lead in varied settings.
  • Dedication to Public Service: Deeply committed to making a positive difference in the world. Has distinguished record of service to his or her home or community, the nation, the international community and/or other public causes. Takes care to mentor others seeking to serve.
  • Support for the Harvard Veteran Community: Has contributed to the Harvard Veteran community by recruiting and mentoring candidates, sharing knowledge and experience with other Harvard Veterans, and supporting and/or participating in Harvard Veterans Alumni Organization activities.

HVAO ALLY AWARD
 

The HVAO Ally Award was established in 2021 to recognize a non-veteran for providing exceptional leadership and support through their efforts to include, support, and/or honor Harvard veterans. The evaluation criteria are as follows:
 
  • Supporting Harvard Veterans: Notable financial or volunteer support to the HVAO; being an outstanding mentor to multiple veterans; participation in numerous engagements with the current class.
  • Including Harvard Veterans: Dedication to efforts to bring veterans and ROTC-interest candidate to Harvard. Track record of mentoring veteran and ROTC applicants to Harvard and inviting veterans to participate in diverse events and opportunities.
  • Honoring Harvard Veterans: Contributions to honor and bring awareness of Harvard’s veterans, especially those who died while serving in the U.S. military.

HVAO ON-CAMPUS IMPACT AWARD
 

The HVAO On-Campus Impact Award was established in 2021 to recognize an on-campus Harvard student veteran or ROTC/military-affiliated student for providing impactful leadership for on-campus veterans, educating the Harvard community, building relationships with various Harvard administrations, and/or honoring Harvard’s historic veterans. The evaluation criteria are as follows:
 
  • Impactful Leadership for On-Campus Veterans: Dedicated leadership for on-campus Harvard-affiliated students, especially those outside of the nominee’s school.
  • Education: Evidence of highly effective efforts to educate Harvard civilian students, administration, and stakeholders on the U.S. military (e.g., bridging the civilian-military gap, shedding light on career opportunities).
  • Relationship-Building: Facilitated effective positive communication, teamwork and positive regard with the administrations of Harvard University and its various schools and other external leadership bodies (e.g., ROTC cadres, military units).
  • Honoring Harvard Veterans: Contributions to honor and bring awareness of Harvard’s veterans, especially those who died while serving in the U.S. military.
